QUOTES from the ARTISTS of RADIANCE ->
"It’s so rare to work on a play with an all-Asian cast written by an Asian American playwright, so it was incredibly meaningful to be part of bringing my home on the moon to life!"
- Fern Lim (RADIANCE Actor)
"My curiosity was piqued when I was invited to be an actor during the Radiance online theater residency showcase. Unsure about how four women across three wildly different time zones would pull together to practice their art, I stepped into the experience blindly and hopeful. Cristina and Amanda are visionaries for setting the stage for this incredible international event. Maipy, Adina, Thea and I severed bonds with the constraints of our distant realities, laughed together, got angry together and ultimately had a great time brining Madalina Oprisan’s often-too-close-to-home story to life. I feel lucky to have met and collaborated with all these women, on all levels. And I look forward to continuing to support BiB (whom I love!) and future Radiance events."
– Teodora Cristea (RADIANCE Actor)
"The idea for this virtual residency started as I was finishing my MFA and we were at the beginning of the COVID pandemic. I had seen some other organizations launching virtual residencies, but I hadn't seen any residencies that necessarily catered to playwriting. I had worked with Cristina nearly a decade ago when we were both living in DC, and she graciously teamed up with me to publicize the virtual reading of my MFA thesis through Bucharest Inside the Beltway, so I was happy with the idea of another virtual collaboration, especially one that could go international. I love that we were able to honor all the places where we have roots (DC, Bucharest, and Denver) by having artists from those communities write and revise new plays with us, as well as other artists repping Seattle and London. As a Romanian American who hasn't been able to spend much time in Romania, I love being able to have this cross-cultural exchange through thoughtful art-making, critique, and conversation ... I'd say the residency was a success based on the fact that we were able to collaborate with Wheat Ridge Theater company to direct the plays with actors from all across the country and present our virtual showcase and talkback. I'm also excited to see the Denver showcase (when it's COVID safe to do so!) One thing that I learned from this whole experience was how to produce virtual theater during this pandemic area -- dealing with casting, scheduling, and logistics -- it was great to be on the other side and helping the playwrights bring their visions to life."
